Revised GT-R almost good to go

Updated 2022 car in two limited count power-packed editions.

HAVING already undergone two facelifts and 14 previous special editions during a 12-year production span, another series of tweaks for the fabled Nissan GT-R will hardly come as a surprise.

The latest nip and tuck for the monster coupe is strictly speaking for Japan only, however that’s never kept the car from coming to New Zealand in as-new format.

In this case, though, first-time buyers from outside of the home market might need to have very good connections.

No prizes for guessing that Nissan’s announcement yesterday is that there will be two more specials, scheduled to go on sale from the end of next month.

Production of the Premium Edition T-Spec and the Track Edition Engineered by Nismo T-Spec will be limited to just 100 units in total, with the owners being selected by ballot.

Upgrades for the GT-R Premium Edition T-Spec include wider (and lighter) Rays alloy wheels and tweaked suspension which takes advantage of a drop in unsprung weight. Nissan has also revised the car’s seats, with some model-specific stitching.

The GT-R Track Edition Engineered by Nismo T-Spec loses a couple of kilogrammes over the standard car, thanks to a new carbon-fibre roof and boot lid. Both T-Spec cars can also be specified with a choice of two new paint colours – Midnight Purple and Millennium Jade. 

Both cars are powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine, which produces 392kW in the Premium Edition model and 441kW in the Track Edition variant. Both cars also share the same four-wheel drive system and six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Nissan’s strategy of basically updating the car annually is influenced by the Japanese concept of “Kaizen,” which roughly translates as “changes for the better” or “the mentality of improvement.”

However, it’s expected the 2022 pair could be among the final versions before the car is discontinued.
