Podholic: Watt’s up on the EV landscape

High-voltage dialogue about electric vehicles.

COULD a video podcast be a beacon for both electric vehicle enthusiasts and sceptics?

The Out of Spec show seeks to present a balanced tableau of the electrification landscape.

Hosted by a team of passionate personalities, the weekly pod carves out a new space in EV-related content creation.

It’s a US-centric show (broadcasting from Fort Collins, Colorado) seeking to be the ultimate go-to for everything electric; so, latest news to deep dives into vehicle technology, realities of EV ownership, cutting-edge battery developments and the ever-evolving landscape of charging infrastructure. Obviously with US flavour.

It also features regular interviews with key figures within the automotive industry, providing listeners with fascinating behind-the-scenes insights. These attributes, combined with the deep dives into specific vehicle technologies and EV ownership realities, make for a highly informative listen.

One enjoyable aspect is the podcast’s attention to vehicle technology. I was fascinated by the show’s exploration into Hyundai and Kia’s development of a durable active air skirt to enhance aerodynamic efficiency.

Their critique of Tesla’s Cybertruck became another personal must-watch. While largely positive, the doorstop on wheels didn’t escape judgment without a few raised eyebrows; warranty exclusions that challenge the truck’s rugged persona and unorthodox cleaning regimes for the stainless-steel exoskeleton made for some passionate dialogue.

The podcast has challenges. The monotone delivery could seem more like a university lecture than a dynamic discussion. Additionally, while the video format, sharp graphics and commendable audio quality are pluses, the sheer count of adverts at the beginning of each episode might be off-putting.

The hosts’ assumption of the audience’s familiarity with EV terminology might lead to confusion.

Despite this, the pod impresses for its largely unbiased perspectives on EV ownership, steering clear of the all-too-common cult of Elon’ narrative that permeates many other shows.

Final thoughts? While the Out of Spec Podcast could benefit from a more dynamic presentation style and fewer adverts, its comprehensive coverage, insightful analysis, and commitment to providing an unbiased view of the electric vehicle landscape make it a valuable resource for anyone interested in electric vehicles.
