Nissan NZ still battling web attackers

Damage from last week’s cyberattack continues to impact national operations.

COMPUTER systems used by Nissan in New Zealand hit by a cyberattack more than a week ago are still being hampered, but restoration of the customer call centre has occurred, the brand has indicated.

The Japanese car maker is continuing to investigate the breach, which it acknowledged on December 6, saying then that it may have let hackers access personal information.

Details of the attack have not been published but the company last week warned customers of its Nissan Oceania division, which spans NZ and Australia, there is a risk of scams.

Nissan Oceania covers distribution, marketing, sales, and services in Australia and New Zealand.

Nissan NZ has resorted to using texts and cell calls to communicate, as its regular phone lines and email is down.

It has posted on its website, which appears unaffected, that the customer call centres here and in Australia reopened yesterday.

In its initial comment, the parent in Japan has been working with its global incident response team and relevant stakeholders to investigate the extent of the incident and whether any personal information has been accessed.

Because the risk from customer data being compromised is significant, Nissan warned then about potential scams targeting account holders and the possibility of account hijacking.

It has not offered any additional information since then and the warning remains in place on the Nissan NZ website today.

Nissan clarifies that its dealers' network have not been impacted and all vehicle and service queries may be submitted and there will be no delays in processing them.

The government agencies in Australia and New Zealand tasked with improving cyber resilience (the Cyber Security Centre) have been notified about the incident.

In response to request form comment, Melbourne-based Nissan Oceania corporate communications manager Emily Fadeyev said by text: “…our website is the most up to date source of information … we will continue to provide updates to the website as they become available.”
