Bigfoot Toyota stumbles

Fire risk triggers recall of Land Cruiser and Lexus equivalent.

RECALL action relating to a potential elevated fire risk to the largest Toyota sold here is under way.

The notice from Toyota Zealand encompasses the Land Cruiser 300 Series and its Lexus equivalent, the LX; 428 examples of the first and 143 of the second.

Affected vehicles are from the 2024 and 2025 model years.

The action results from concern about the automatic transmission ECU.

“The subject vehicles are equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission that contains linear solenoids to control the shifting of gears,” reads the notice.

“If a solenoid failure occurs under certain driving conditions, the Transmission Electronic Control Unit (T-ECU) and the Engine ECU may not communicate the failure, resulting in the transmission over-revving in certain gears.

“This could result in damage to the transmission and a loss of motive power while driving at higher speeds. If certain damage occurs to the transmission housing. There is also the possibility for transmission fluid to leak from the housing.

“These conditions can lead to an increased risk of a crash, or a fire in the presence of an ignition source.”

The Palmerston North-centred brand has created a registration database for owners to search to see whether their vehicle is impacted.

Owners are being contacted to arrange repairs, which are said to take approximately 1.5 hours and are free of charge.
