KGM intent on continuing in NZ

Outgoing distributor clarifies brand’s position; discusses another make under regional spotlight.

A DAY after announcing intention to quit representation of KGM, Inchcape has made clear the Korean make intends to remain in New Zealand.

Additionally, it has reaffirmed continued connection to another holding here, a brand feeling heat across the Tasman.

A lengthy media share from the United Kingdom-headquartered, multinational automotive investor yesterday explained why it and KGM were parting ways, after barely two years of corporate marriage.

It came back today with some insight into the potential future for the Korean sports utility and ute specialist formerly known as SsangYong.

This morning it sent out an additional e-mail headed ‘additional information regarding Inchcape ceasing KGM distribution in New Zealand.’

In this it stated “to add to our media statement yesterday  …KGM have confirmed the KGM brand will continue in New Zealand and they will provide updates on their local distribution plans in time.”

Asked why that information was not included in the original statement, a brand spokesman offered this explanation.

“The additional information was subsequently incorporated into the statement to provide further context and clarity.

“There was no intention to withhold information or create confusion.”

Inchcape has also spoken in respect to another of the two other brands it represents here.

It has held rights to LDV, a ute and van maker from China, since 2023. LDV is a sub-brand of SAIC Motor Corporation, which also makes MG product.

The make has been a subject of regional interest, due to a court proceeding in Australia in respect to corrosion challenges with popular products also sold here.

No such action has occurred here. Distribution arrangements are also unlinked.

In NZ, it’s Inchcape, which took over from Great Lake Motor Distributors. Representation across the Tasman is with Ateco Automotive.

Inchcape’s then general manager here offered comment on this matter a year ago.

Asked if it had any further announcements, Inchcape NZ said today “the announcement on KGM is a brand-specific decision and should not be interpreted as a broader statement about other brands within our portfolio.

“Inchcape continually reviews its portfolio to ensure it remains aligned with evolving market conditions, customer needs and strategic priorities.

“LDV remains part of our New Zealand portfolio, and we continue to work closely with our OEM partners to support their objectives in this market.”
