Seven concept big on tech, home comforts

'Parametric Pixel' lights and a lounge inside are features of a design study that previews the make’s next member of the Ioniq electric car family.

AMONG images sent by Hyundai offering limited preview of their next bespoke electric car, some photos apparently showing the designer’s lounge.

Just joking.

All five images reference the Seven concept car, a preview of the Ioniq 7 large sports utility that is coming out in 2022.

The shots reinforce the make’s intent to deliver the model with a design that “dares to diverge” from industry traditions, particularly with the cabin. Which, as the images suggests, seems to a place in which occupants will enjoy relaxing.

The car is a larger sister model to the Ioniq 5 crossover now on sale in New Zealand and raising such consumer enthusiasm the order bank is now well into next year.

The ‘Seven’ is aimed as a rival for the likes of the Tesla Model X and also BMW’s iX, also impending for this market.

Though primarily designed for North America and China, markets critical to Hyundai’s electric vehicle ambition, the Seven is also intended for sale in NZ.

The single teaser of the exterior limits to giving insight into the front-end styling, and while carefully posed, it suggests the SUV will take a different approach to the ‘Five’. The new 'parametric pixel' LED headlights and a large bumper with side LED lights on it is quite different to the hatchback’s approach.

Hyundai has also released teaser images of the interior that depict a large 'lounge-style' chair positioned in the front of the car, and a plush sofa-style rear bench that appears to be finished in soft materials.

The firm said the Seven concept will "follow a form over function design". According to Hyundai, the machine will offer "a premium and personalised lounge ambience" that will build on the interior in the Ioniq 5. It has also said the furnishings will be finished in sustainable materials.

The Seven concept will be revealed on 17 November during the LA motor show press days.
