Kia EV show a triple treat

Spotlight on two small electrics aimed at budget buyers and a larger SUV.

TWO additional electrics aimed at budget buyers and set for production have been unveiled by Kia today - and a third slightly larger SUV previously indicated as being just for China, where it will be built, has now been announced as having global ambition.

The EV3 SUV (top), tipped as a repalcement for the current Kia Soul electric, and EV4 sedan (directly above) that Kia revealed today are officially still concepts, however the Hyundai Group affiliate brand has made clear they will be make the showroom. EV4 is cited as a 2026 release.

Also unveiled at the make’s international EV Day near Seoul was a production format of the EV5 (below), a medium SUV that was seen last year as a concept. It will be out in 2025.

Having previously indicated it was for China only, where it will be built as well as in South Korea, Kia now says EV5 will be an international car as well. Australia has already said it will take China-made EV5s.

These cars are intended to make Kia electric vehicles accessible to more people and allow it to achieve a sales target of one million EVs by 2026.

EV5 draws directly off the 800 volt E-GMP platform that underpins the EV6 and EV9 already here, however EV3 and EV4 are taking a 400v set-up, as a cost-saving.

EV5 in China and South Korea will also have different battery types. Those EV5s sold in China will adopt lithium-phosphate-iron (LFP) batteries, while EV5s in South Korea will adopt more expensive nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries, said Kia President Song Ho Sung.

The EV5 in China will have a maximum driving range of 720kms, Kia said in a statement, adding that the model will offer fast-charging capability, allowing the battery to be charged from 30 percent to 80 percent capacity in 27 minutes.

Anything else? One show attendee has posted that he also achieved insight into an even smaller, perhaps city-themed EV2.
