Interior, spec sharpen for MG4

Expectation family will reduce from four to two variants seems all the more certain.

REGIONALLY-relevant updates impending for the MG’s core electric car have revealed.

The Sino-Brit brand chose the Melbourne motor show to reveal the refreshed MG4, primarily to introduce it to Australia though it in understood the 2026 lineup, now halved to two variants.

A reduction in grades, in part to make way for the MG4 Urban, a wholly different car which assumes as the brand’s cheapest electric choice, means the selection crops from four derivatives previously to just two.

Surviving the cull are a rear wheel drive Essence 64 and an all wheel drive MG4 XPower.

Changes to a car that has already enjoyed three years of sale in NZ include stronger technology, enhanced cabin quality and improvements to performance and driving, plus altered exterior features and wheels, though no revision to the metalwork.

New for 2026 is a revised interior design similar to that in the related MG S5 and MG S6 electric SUVs (and the MG4 Urban), with a larger infotainment touchscreen running new software, physical air-conditioning and media controls, and a bigger digital instrument cluster.

MG says it has also improved material quality, while other changes include new door cards, and a revised centre console layout with a relocated wireless smartphone charger, rotary gear selector and cup holders.

It is the latest MG to achieve a custom MG Pilot safety settings button and new infotainment software introduces built-in applications, such as Spotify, YouTube, TikTok and Amazon Music, and enables wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone connections.

The Essence 64 delivers an improved range of up to 452 kilometres, from 435km previously, when measured to the WLTP combined scale.

It utilises a new 64kWh lithium-iron phosphate LFP battery mated to a motor that, with 140kW, makes 10kW less than previously. Torque climbs 100Nm, to 350Nm. A charging time of 25 minutes from 10-80 percent is cited.

The XPower offers a 64kWh nickel cobalt manganese NCM battery, all-wheel drive pairing, feeding out a combined 300kW and 600Nm, with top speed and the 0-100kmh time of 3.8 seconds maintained. It has a potential range of up to 405 km.

The Essence gets a new aerodynamic rear spoiler and three new colours – Iris Cyan, Sterling Silver and Piccadilly Blue - add to existing options.
