AMG’s super-feral EV hits the road in style

The big international reveal of the AMG GT 63 GT coupe in Los Angeles was a Hollywood-style blockbuster.

SOME new car reveals involve nothing more than a couple of staff members whipping a shroud off the product in question.

Nothing so simply for Mercedes-AMG’s most outrageous car.

Showing that model off entailed considerable effort.

The German brand first of all managed to close off a major bridge in Los Angeles.

In doing that, it then used Hollywood experts to turn the precinct into a kind of autobahn.

On which the new GT four-door coupe then ripped burnouts. Just after sunset. With fireworks, a light show … and Brad Pitt and George Russell alternately sitting shotgun.

Then, as the Jalopnik website put it “Blink-182 did a 30-minute set and made a lot of dick jokes.”

As today’s video shows, it was quite some celebration. But this is quite some car to celebrate.

The big news about this new generation isn’t so much that it looks quite outer worldly; the shape influenced by the design of the AMG Concept GT XX.

What’s making the headlines is that it has ditched its twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine and plug-in hybrid system for an even more potent electric powertrain.

Due on sale in its first right hand drive market, the United Kingdom, in September, the from around $320,000, this car which can sprint from 0-100kmh in just 2.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 300kmh, thanks to 860kW power and 2000Nm of torque.

All from three electric motors, one at the front and two at the rear.

These are all axial-flux, having been developed in partnership with Yasa, and which have previously propelled the Concept AMG GT XX to 25 records last year.

In the ‘entry-level’ AMG GT55 4‑Door Coupé, it produces 600kW and 1800Nm, a slight power dip but healthy torque increase compared to its 600kW and 1420Nm GT63 predecessor. But that can be enhanced to full strength with an optional Driver’s Package.

Sounds great? Well, it does, because AMG has given the GT 4-Door Coupé technology first tried with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, with simulated gear shifts and V8-esque engine sounds.

What the brand promises are “a highly authentic, AMG signature V8 sound spectacle” avails at fullest strength when using the most spicy AMGFORCE S Plus setting.

According to AMG, the sound portfolio is patent-pending, and “blends the legendary AMG V8 acoustics with innovative electric technology”, which was largely based on the twin-turbo V8 from the AMG GT R coupe.

The model runs a 106kWh battery pack, with AMG claiming a driving range of up to 696km for the full blown GT63 and up to 700km for the lower-tier but still furious GT55.

Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, the EV can accept DC fast charging at up to 600kW, adding more than 460km of range in about 11 minutes.

The new motors are a massive departure from the radial-flux motors used in existing Mercedes EVs. Instead of electromagnetic flow running perpendicular to the motor shaft, it runs parallel, allowing a flatter, disc-like construction.

This allows for more compact packaging. Each rear motor measures around 80mm wide, while the front motor is slightly larger, at around 90mm wide. The rear motors rev to 13,000rpm, while the front motor is capable of extending to 15,000rpm.

New Zealand pricing and availability timing is yet to be announce, but the car has actually already been here, having been in Central Otago for cold weather testing.

And also an embarrassing crash on the Crown Range road which saw a heavily disguised car lose control and sideswipe a locals’ Subaru Outback, which resulted in a high-ranking German engineer making a court appearance.
