Podholic: No avoiding the inevitable

Curious about the future of motoring? The Inevitable Podcast aims to have you covered.

SINCE the dawn of humanity, we’ve strived to predict what the future will hold, whether it be weather, war or nuclear fusion energy (which is still happening, promise).

Futurists often point to electric propulsion and driverless cars on the automotive horizon, but what else can we expect?

To help answer this question, the talented scribes over at MotorTrend have put together the Inevitable podcast, a new-to-the-scene weekly show hosted by American journalists Ed Loh and Jonny Lieberman (the burly bearded one from MotorTrend’s YouTube channel).

Promisingly, whilst the charismatic hosts come from a profession entwined with internal combustion stalwarts, they are refreshingly honest and open-minded to EVs and other future technologies like hydrogen fuel cells and artificial intelligence.

Sure, while some episodes are a bit ‘light’ on the futurism side of things, I found guest journalist Kristen Lee’s perspective on the future of automotive journalism utmost intriguing.

Lee points out that the parameters for judging battery-electric vehicles are changing compared to fossil-fuelled mobility. The sensations within a BEV are just different …elements we’re used to, like rev-matching, turbo-lag, and exhaust acoustics, which are fast becoming from a bygone era.

Intriguingly, Lee suggests comparing EVs will come down to interior technologies and ease of charging. Future battery chemistries such as solid-state cells, 5G connected cars, and weight reduction will also become new comparison metrics.

The show is also a must-listen for those involved in vehicle modification. Jonathan Ward from US-domiciled resto-mod firm, Icon4x4 joins in the chat to discuss the emergence of EV powertrain conversions within the aftermarket industry.

Simple stuff, right? Just rip out that old internal combustion engine and plug and play? As I found out, according to Icon’s CEO, that would be an unequivocal no. The lack of EV controllers, software calibration specialists, and, umm – noise are the main barriers to EV hot rod conversions.

Get enlightened, crank up the volume and check out the Inevitable.
