Podholic: Behind The Glass

A strong candidate for best podcast of the year.

AMONG the vast grid of podcasts from all walks of the content spectrum, one rarely sees a show that ticks so many boxes. Behind The Glass is just the ticket that will have you hooked. So what makes this pod a star standout?

Co-hosted by a couple of ever-enthusiastic Brits named Sam Fane and Tony Dennard, Behind The Glass is a weekly affair that dives into all things automotive with a penchant for performance cars and the world of Formula One. As it turns out, this dynamic duo has both behind-the-wheel experience and conversational chemistry to bring a fresh perspective in a sea of mediocre broadcasts.

Background-wise, Tony is a used car dealer with a weapons cache of knowledge in the world of vehicle sales, and Sam has earned his stripes as a popular YouTuber. Both deliver a unique dynamic full of opinion, information and genuine banter that isn’t forced nor scripted. They’re just two mates having a yarn.

After diving into just a few episodes, one can immediately sense the sheer passion for the industry that these gents have. The range of topics covered means there is something for everybody, whether it's opinions on the most annoying YouTubers, what semi-autonomous safety assists grind your gears the most or which luxury cars truly deserve your cold, hard-earned cash.

In particular, listening to Sam’s pitfalls of attending the Monaco Grand Prix was an entertaining eye-opener. For all the glitz and glam that the event generates, not even connections with local royalty could guarantee an ideal vantage point to see Lewis Hamilton at his finest.

While New Zealand fanatics aren’t lucky enough to enjoy the pinnacle of motorsport on home soil, one can be thankful that many of the county’s venues are spectator-friendly, with multitudes of vantage points to catch the action from all angles. In a recent event held at Feilding’s Manfeild, circuit Chris Amon, highlights this point, as seeing the entire track from the grandstand illustrates just how good we Kiwis have when it comes to spectator viewing.

Production quality is well-finessed, with excellent audio quality and little in the way of annoying sponsorship adverts. For those watching it on YouTube, the pod is filmed in a humble office space surrounded by posters and prints that will have you buying automotive art faster than a Porsche 911 accelerates to the open road limit.

Overall, I highly recommend the Behind The Glass podcast to anyone who loves cars and wants to stay in the know about the latest happenings in the industry. Tony and Sam are knowledgeable, entertaining and provide great content every week.

Behind The Glass can be found on all good platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Acast. So grab a pint, sit back and listen away.
