EV6 GT here – and first lot is gone

Kia’s electric hotshot seems to be outpacing order book

KIWI expectation of driving Kia’s most stonking car yet has been met – but with arrival of the EV6 in its flagship GT format comes admission that, like other markets, New Zealand might struggle to achieve as many as it might want.

In wake of today’s announcement of the first examples of the v430kW/740Nm dual motor walloper having reached dealerships, the local operation has also acknowledged the initial launch volume – a count which it has not disclosed – is spoken for.

It has also hinted more are coming but when and how many is potentially a challenge. Though not for the lack of trying.

"Interest in the new EV6 GT has been phenomenal and we have enjoyed a very successful pre-sales campaign, essentially selling out of the initial launch volume,” a Kia NZ spokesman said.

"Sourcing supply of the new EV6 GT is challenging given the overwhelming global demand for the new model.”

“We want to assure customers we are doing our best to secure as many units as possible.”

In the here and now, the operation is encouraging would-be buyers to “get in touch with their nearest dealer to indicate their interest in upcoming arrivals of new stock.”

Hot interest in the car was always expected. Kia NZ has spent the past year talking up what it is describing as the pinnacle of the EV6 development.

That tone continues.

“The EV6 GT is the most powerful and fastest model to ever wear the Kia badge, it is the new halo model for the brand and is a massive statement of intent for us,” said Todd McDonald, Kia NZ’s managing director.

“This is one incredibly special car and is the epitome of what a GT should be, a spacious and comfortable vehicle capable of devouring touring kilometres with ease, with power and performance available when required.”

A variant claimed to achieve 0-100kmh in 3.5 seconds stands out from the mainstream editions in also taking a bespoke suspension tune, steering, chassis upgrades, performance braking system and an upgraded traction battery. The front seat design also changes.

The front motor increases from 70kW/255Nm to 160kW/350Nm.  The rear motor jumps from 160kW/350Nm to a massive 270kW/390Nm.

Further elements include 21-inch machine finished alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres and a GT-specific rear diffuser.

It hs the same 1800kg towing rating as the standard dual motor and also can offer vehicle to load, though the exterior adaptor is a cost extra.

“The EV6 GT is a car that exudes the power, performance and agility of a track worthy sports car, while also providing comfort, on-road drivability and practicality for everyday use,” said McDonald in supplied comment today.

“The combination of super car performance, long touring range and ultra-fast charging means the EV6 GT is a truly exciting and capable GT for the electric era.”
