Product push by GWM brand family

PHEV and electric are to the fore via Haval, Ora and a new entry, Wey.

ANOTHER Ora, a first electric from Haval and a big mover introducing the Wey luxury marque.

These are among seven new models coming from GWM, all within the next 18 months.

Focus on electrification will intensify; GWM says although it has plans to add an extra diesel to its Tank SUV and Cannon Alpha utes, it believes plug-in hybrid and full electric cars are even more crucial.

Holding particular promise is a rejigged Haval Jolion small SUV family;  with addition of the Jolion Max (below), a new small SUV to slot above current Jolion choices.

The Max will introduce plug-in hybrid and fully electric to this nameplate.

“The Jolion has a petrol and a hybrid, so the Jolion and Jolion Pro,” said GWM New Zealand and Australia chief operating officer John Kett.

“We're going to introduce what's called Jolion Max next year, which will have two different fuels (PHEV and electric).”

The car has recently released in China, as the Xiaolong.

Also adding to the electric corner is Ora 5, a small SUV from to jolt Ora, GWM’s bespoke electric make, back into better life than it has enjoyed for the past year with current sole choice, the 03 small hatch.

The Ora 5 (below) is a slightly smaller vehicle than the Jolion Max and will differentiate on exterior and interior design.

“We obviously have Ora sitting in the small car segment. In the small SUV segment, we will certainly have an Ora small SUV next year,” Kett said.

GWM is also weighing up an electric Ora mid-size SUV plus it thinks there is opportunity for the Haval H7, another SUV of similar size, in a plug-in petrol hybrid format.

Wey - named after GWM’s founder - is a luxury marque and it’s first product for right-hand-drive seems set to be a vast plush seven seat MPV, called the G9/G80 (depending on where it sells), a domestic China example of which was on hand to drive at the GMW media drive day at the Lang Lang proving ground in Victoria, a two hour drive from Melbourne airport.

It seems probable the Wey MPV could be availed from mid-2026, with two large SUVs also likely set to join it. Details of those products have yet to be released.
