Extra model allows BMW’s popular SUV to slot below $100k.

EQUIVALENCY with Australia has been achieved in BMW’s X3 range, which the brand adding in to the NZ lineup a 2.0-litre petrol that has availed across the Tasman for some months.

The X3 20 xDrive carries a 140kW/310Nm version of the 2.0-litre twin power turbo petrol and is not an immediate add-in here. This derivative is not set to land until the third quarter.

At $97,900,  it will stand as the entry choice in as family of four derivatives and the only one costing less than $100,000.

Until now, the cheapest X3 has been the $111,900 20d turbodiesel, with a 145kW/400Nm turbodiesel, and two other petrols, a $118,900 xDrive30e with a 220kW/450Nm version of the 2.0-litre petrol and a $150,900 M50 xDrive, with 293kW/580Nm six-cylinder turbo petrol.

The 20 xDrive and 20d xDrive have identical specifications - the premium is entirely for the diesel engine. The petrol engine has a 48 volt assist that adds 8kW and up to 25Nm, if for brief periods. Fuel consumption of 7.6 litres per 100km is claimed.

Though it keeps an office in Auckland, the make has become increasingly directed by its regional office in Melbourne. It’s latest move was to announce intent to conduct all public relations activity for New Zealand from across the Tasman, rather than here.
