Dirt-enhanced X-Trail yet to find a spot
/The facelift programme for Nissan’s popular medium soft-roader includes an image-hardening variant. But not here.
WHETHER recent revision to the Nissan X-Trail range might stretch to include a variant now adding overseas that elevates the type’s ruggedness has yet to be explored.
A core car for the local distributor, X-Trail in its NY26 freshened form is landing with a greater choice of paint colours, trim options and wheel designs alongside added telematics functionality, improved 360-degree camera tech and longer service intervals, but no revisions to the suspension tuning or powertrains.
Pricing remains relatively unsullied.
On stone left unturned is the element of enhanced ruggedness, which appears to have become a sales attraction to buyers keen to express their lifestyle usage, real or perceived.
The prime rival Toyota RAV4 is meeting that with provision now including an Adventure variant with a more rugged outdoorsy look.
The Wilderness package now for the Subaru Outback is of similar vein and though the Subaru is a bigger product, it’s thought Wilderness is also set to come to the Forester, which does butt heads with X-Trail.
Nissan has had a like-configured X-Trail derivative of that ilk previously and has continued that ethos into the fresh type.
There is no word out of Nissan nationally or regionally about whether it can secure the latest X-Trail N-Trek.
Nissan Japan has boosted this version with the same kind of hyperbole Toyota is using to bolster the RAV4 Adventure and Subaru for the Outback Wilderness editions - as being the better go-to for outdoors’ adventure.
In respect to N-Trek, Nissan says it is “perfect for those "whose idea of a perfect weekend is gearing up for mountain biking trails, skiing trips, or even just an adventurous family walk challenge.”
The N-Trek gets a more obviously rugged look, with 'Magma Red' bumper inserts and contrast interior stitching, plus black-and-red Nissan logos on the wheels, tailgate, front grille and steering wheel. There's also a cool, subtle 'magma red' Mount Fuji 'easter egg' logo in the boot.
It also takes full LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails and chunkier bumpers, plus three distinct 'nostrils' set high up in the nose.
Inside, there's an electric panoramic sunroof, and seats covered in a cool 'CellCloth' waterproof upholstery, waterproof rubber mats and a reversible boot liner.
Meantime, the revised X-Trail family that is entering the showroom can be identified by having a revised frontal and rear-end styling, improved cabin materials and now wholesale use of a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The NY26 range adds two new paint colours – Deep Ocean Blue and Everest White – and a new chestnut interior finish for the flagship Ti-L grade, replacing tan. On all variants with the black upholstery, upper dashboard and door cards are replaced with black material in lieu of brown.
Other interior changes include a revised steering wheel design genuine leather accenting on the mid-tier ST-L grade (previously synthetic). The front seat passenger in the ST-L grade now further benefits from 10-way power seat adjustment, matching that of the driver’s side.
Nissan says the X-Trail’s updated Connected Car Services suite adds more comprehensive remote vehicle monitoring and control capabilities, including remote engine start on the flagship grade, vehicle health reporting, theft/burglar notifications, and maintenance alerts, all of which are managed through a dedicated smartphone app.
ST-L grades and above further include an enhanced 3D Around View Monitor (360-degree camera system) that allows owners to virtually rotate the vehicle or select from eight different camera views to improve parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces.
The updated system further features Skeleton Hood view for improved visibility on narrow roads and Multi View support for T-junction scenarios.
Powertrain, packaging, and safety features remain unchanged.
