Shark out for bigger bite of ute sector
/Performance flagship and flat deck aimed at work force revealed for regional sale.
HAVING previously hunted solely as a 1.5-litre dual cab wellside, BYD’s plug-in hybrid petrol Shark 6 choice has expanded to a cab-chassis variant and a more powerful 2.0-litre flagship model.
The updated range unveiled today in Australia and now comprises three variants across the Tasman.
BYD New Zealand has already confirmed it will sell at least the new Performance price-topper.
The existing Shark 6 holds a RRP of $69,990 here. The new models are set to site on either side of that, going by Australia market positioning.
Over there the trade-focused Dynamic cab-chassis goes from $67,522 plus on-road costs and the Performance model from $76,000.
These being New Zealand dollar conversions of the Australia market stickers.
All variants use BYD’s dual-mode hybrid system, involving a turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors.
The existing 1.5-litre system delivering 321kW and 650Nm continues as a major choice, and will go into the cab-chassis.
The Performance flagship upgrades to a 2.0-litre setup producing 350kW and 700Nm.
The uplift makes little difference to the 0-100kmh time, which reduces from 5.7 seconds to 5.5, but brings a welcome increase in towing capacity, with the Performance variant rated to tow up to 3500kg, compared with 2500kg for the lower grades.
BYD says the cab-chassis version is aimed at trade and fleet buyers.
The alloy tray seen on the pictured example was developed by an Australian supplier, Ironman 4x4, and is optional. It features eight integrated tie-down points and two lockable storage boxes, with an optional trundle tray.
BYD Australia, which is factory-operated (whereas NZ distribution is with a third party, Ateco) has indicated to media in Australia desire to broaden the Shark 6’s appeal at time of increasing competition in the emerging electrified ute space, with several rivals preparing hybrid or electric alternatives due to arrive in the coming years.
The Performance model is due to arrive in Australia in May. BYD there says it is for customers with serious adventure in mind.
