Caddy and Corvette get chatty

Google Gemini rollout for latest NZ-market cars starting from today.

INTRODUCTION of artificial intelligence to your car is under way - and one functionality that allows fluid conversation with a car has announced for latest Cadillac and Corvettes sold here.

The update to Google Gemini as a basis of those products’ in-vehicle voice assistant has started today.

The system is one of several - others that have the limelight being ChatGPT and Tesla’s Grok - Gemini - that allow users to have conversations with an AI agent applying Large Language Models (LLMs).

The software uses deep learning, based on massive pattern-based data sets, to respond in a way that feels like a normal human conversation.

LLMs can be prompted by developers to stick to certain subjects or avoid other topics that are deemed off-limits; but the plus point pushed by General Motors’ Speciality Vehicles, which sells Corvette and Cadillac here, is that it will deliver adaptable interactions, and smarter problem-solving to help owners get around.

In a media share, GMSV says Gemini will facilitate to all Cadillac and Corvette vehicles with Google built-in.

What is described as the latest evolution of General Motors’ in-vehicle voice assistant with natural language and contextual awareness will facilitate as a trial, with potential for subscription costs applying thereafter for some functions.

Gemini runs within GM's infotainment system, drawing on the power of the vehicle's software platform, and Connected Services to deliver richer information.

Once available in their vehicles, customers will immediately notice an upgrade from the current Google Assistant to a smarter, more intuitive Al that continues to improve over time, the GMSV media share said today.

“With Gemini, you can speak naturally without memorising commands or repeating context.

“Ask for music that fits your mood, the scenery, or the length of your trip. Talk to Gemini about the landscape or landmarks as you drive past.

“You can debate big ideas, explore random curiosities, and even send texts translated in different languages — all while keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.”

LLM integration is far from being a GM preserve.

Back in 2020, China’s Xpeng claimed to launch the world’s first ‘AI-defined’ vehicle, with both cockpit functions and driver-assist features handled by AI.

Last year, Tesla added compatibility with Grok, an AI assistant developed by xAI, a company founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and already in use across the X social media platform.

Grok integration can co-exist with Tesla’s existing voice command controls and adds the ability to pick from different personalities.

The latest Mercedes-Benz MBUX infotainment system will offer access to ChatGPT and Google Gemini assistants.

Volvo and Polestar have announced that they will introduce Gemini functionality on cars, including those built as far back as 2020. GMSV’s introduction spans some 2025 models, but is mostly for 2026 and onward.
