Omoda reveals new number

Compact ‘4’ is set to represent a full span of drivetrain technologies.

A SHARP new number from Omoda has revealed, with potential regional release highly likely.

The Omoda 4 is a global compact SUV seemingly set to available with petrol, hybrid, PHEV and EV powertrains.

So far the make has said it will definitely run a plug-in hybrid setup.

That derivative, labelled the Omoda 5 SHS-H will be a series-parallel hybrid that delivers a 0–100 kmh time of 7.9 seconds and a comprehensive power output of 165kW. Additionally, it offers a WLTP range of 1000km, according to the make.

It is expected to take on not only all the usual suspects from other brands in China - notably the BYD Atto 2 incoming here soon - but also the Kia EV4 and, some say, the Toyota Corolla Cross.

A highlight of a Jaecoo-Omoda exposition at the weekend run by the brands’ parent, Chery, the ‘4’ is a production edition of a concept shown in April … when it was (yes, this might confuse) labelled the Omoda 3.

Equipment levels, pricing and what powertrains might be coming regionally are still yet to be announced.

Omoda 4 will place as an understudy to the Omoda 5 that has been on sale here since the start of 2024 in C5 petrol and E5 electric formats.

It’s based on the same T1X platform as the 5 and several other Chery models, including the Jaecoo J7 mid-size SUV also offered here.

Omoda says the exterior lines are the first example of a  “Cyber Mecha” design philosophy that delivers a “futuristic mech-inspired” ideal that “completely rethinks conventional ideas.”

“From the sharp front lights and angular side lines to the mechanically detailed rear design, every element combines to create an SUV that looks like no other.”

The thematic extends into the cabin, where the Omoda 4 supports immersive in-car entertainment and allows personalised customisation enabling users to integrate creativity and preferences into the vehicle for a truly unique experience, the make relates.

The change from Omoda 3 to 4 came because, reports say, the production format has a longer wheelbase than the styling study. Also, Chery considered the higher numerical leaves space for more additional models beneath.

Also, on display at Chery Groups’ annual International User Summit was the larger Omoda 7, which is equipped with the latest Automatic Parking Assistance system.

Already seen on the Jaecoo J8 and Omoda 9, the next iteration of the APA system now supports over 1000 different parking scenarios.

The vehicle can intelligently identify the environment and autonomously complete both entry and exit manoeuvres.

On top of this, there’s also an RPA (Remote Parking Assistance) function allowing drivers to step out of the car and use the key remote to guide the vehicle in or out of tight parking spots with precision.
